- Soil: deep, rich, moisture retentive
Crisp, crunchy Chinese cabbage has much more in common with lettuces than cabbages, and is an excellent choice of salad leaf to take over at the end of summer as it grows best in cooler weather. 'Yuki' is slow to bolt even in drier conditions and produces dense, barrel-shaped heads of palest green leaves with a delicate flavour.
- Growing Instructions:Make a shallow drill about 2cm deep and water into the bottom before sowing seed sparingly along its length. Cover seed lightly with soil. Thin seedlings to about 30cm apart, keeping them well-watered in dry conditions. Protect from slugs and cover later sowings with a cloche in bad weather. Cut heads when they feel solid, heavy and firm. After cutting leave the stump in the ground and it will grow a second crop of smaller, looser heads to pick for cut-and-come-again salad leaves.
