  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: humus-rich, moisture retentive soil

This prolific bean has been grown since Victorian times for its generous crop of long, fleshy, flat-podded beans with a tender flavour. The big, bushy plants are vigorous and productive right through the season: leave some pods on the plants to dry for a second harvest of vivid red beans, also known as kidney beans, to store over winter.

  • Growing Instructions: Sow three seeds to a 10cm pot in late spring in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill. Pot seedlings on individually as they grow and harden off carefully to plant out once all threat of frost has passed. Later in the season can be sown direct, allowing 20cm between plants: protect against mice and slugs. A late sowing in mid-July will become productive as the main crop finishes, extending the harvest right through until autumn.

  • Sow: April-June

  • Harvest: July onwards

  • Approximate quantity: 150 seeds.
