Plant description

Fresh and vibrant, the magic of Pollyanna Wilkinson’s Classic Cottage Collection lies in her use of colour. Inspired by her much-loved 2023 garden installation at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, it utilises hard-working perennials that are known to put on a terrific display - perfect then for ramping up the display in the garden at home.

What's included:

Each combination contains the following plants. They are all supplied in 9cm nursery pots:

  • Digitalis purpurea f. albiflora: This elegant foxglove produces stately spires of of white, tubular flowers in June and July held above rosettes of large, hairy, dark green leaves. Perfect for lighting up a shady border or for dotting through a mixed border among evergreen shrubs. Although it is a short-lived plant, given favourable conditions it will self-seed freely. Grows to 1.8m.

  • Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln': A charming perennial grass that forms a compact, low mound and produces long-lasting, soft, pinkish, brush-like flowers in late summer that resemble squirrel tails. The bright green leaves turn yellow in autumn and then brown throughout winter. It’s a fairly undistinguished plant until the flowers appear, so use it alongside spring bulbs or early-flowering perennials. Grows to 1.2m.

  • Geum 'Prinses Juliana': A stunning variety of avens with fiery orange flowers from June to September, held on wiry stems above pretty hummocks of puckered foliage. This easy-to-grow geum looks at its best among other 'hot' coloured flowers towards the front of a well-drained border in sun or partial shade. Grows to 60cm.

  • Salvia nemorosa 'Amethyst': Providing colour for several months from midsummer, the slender upright spires of this sage are clothed in purple-pink buds, which open from the base upwards to lilac-purple, hooded flowers. Plant it towards the front of a sunny, well-drained border, or create drifts through a prairie-style garden where the bees and butterflies will flock to the flowers. Grows 1m.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion. Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.

Please note:

Some of the plants in this collection will die right back in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.
