Plant description

Taking inspiration from Sarah Price's award winning Nurture Landscapes garden at Chelsea in 2023 these border combinations draw on a rich and complex colour palette inspired by the garden. Featuring dusky pinks, deep violets, silvery blues and burgundy, the garden itself drew heavily on the plants Cedric Morris bred, including the iconic Iris ‘Benton Olive’, as well as his paintings.

What's included:

Each combination contains the following plants. They are all supplied in 9cm nursery pots:

  • Festuca amethystina: A low-growing tufted decorative grass, which looks superb planted in bold drifts in a gravel garden or potted into a container. The narrow blue-green to grey-blue foliage adds interest all year round and, purple-flushed summer flower spikes, turning buff as they age make a wonderful combination. Prefers a sunny, well-drained spot over the winter where its low-maintenance architectural form can be appreciated. Grows 60cm.

  • Euphorbia seguieriana subsp. niciciana: A stunning, late-flowering semi-evergreen euphorbia with open sprays of intense, lime green flowers held on red-bronze stems in late summer to early autumn. The foliage is handsome, too, with strappy, grey-green leaves held in whorls on the upright stems. This magnificent perennial forms a natural mound, bringing all-year structure to the garden. In the fading autumn light, it glows and looks fabulous among late-flowering perennials and grasses, or with spiky plants. It is drought tolerant once established. Grows to 50cm.

  • Tulbaghia violacea : Clusters of large, star-like, lilac flowers, which have a slight scent that becomes more pronounced in the evening, top upright stems from midsummer to early autumn. These appear above dense clumps of attractive, grass-like, greyish green leaves. Best grown at the front of a sunny, well-drained border or in a gravel garden, Tulbaghia is often called 'society garlic' as the leaves smell similar to garlic and onions, and can be useful as a pest repellent plant especially when grown under roses. Grows to 45cm.

  • Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet': Rosettes of silver, greyish white leaves provide an attractive, weed suppressing carpet for much of the year. This variety of lamb's ears rarely flowers and is an excellent, drought-tolerant groundcover or edging plant for a well-drained site in full sun. The foliage is a more intense shade of silver than flowering varieties of the plant. Grows to 20cm.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion. Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.

Please note:

Some of the plants in this collection will die right back in autumn, then fresh new growth will appear again in spring.
