Plant description

Taking inspiration from Sarah Price's award winning Nurture Landscapes garden at Chelsea in 2023 these border combinations draw on a rich and complex colour palette inspired by the garden. Featuring dusky pinks, deep violets, silvery blues and burgundy, the garden itself drew heavily on the plants Cedric Morris bred, including the iconic Iris ‘Benton Olive’, as well as his paintings.

What's included:

Each combination contains the following plants. They are all supplied in 9cm nursery pots:

  • Erigeron karvinskianus 'Lavender Lady': Incredibly long-flowering and prolific, this new cultivar is just as reliable as the much-loved species, but it has slightly larger, lavender coloured flowers. A must-have plant for a sunny spot with freely draining soils, it will soon form a spreading carpet of colour that will last from May to October - if not even longer! Grows to 30cm.

  • Festuca amethystina: A low-growing tufted decorative grass, which looks superb planted in bold drifts in a gravel garden or potted into a container. The narrow blue-green to grey-blue foliage adds interest all year round and, purple-flushed summer flower spikes, turning buff as they age make a wonderful combination. Prefers a sunny, well-drained spot over the winter where its low-maintenance architectural form can be appreciated. Grows 60cm.

  • Teucrium × lucidrys: Perfect for lining a pathway or fronting a border, this evergreen perennial has woody stems that are clothed in small deep green leaves, which emit a spicy aroma when they are brushed past or gently bruised. From midsummer onwards clusters of small pink flowers form towards the top of the stems, each with a prominent lip. Grows 30cm.

  • Iris 'Benton Olive': A clump-forming perennial weaving its spell with upright, green ribbons of leaves and slender stems graced with fragrant blooms. Each flower showcases showcases creamy yellow-green standards adorned with a central band of purple, echoed in the falls with darker veining and a subtle lilac splash. These enchanting blooms, reminiscent of the palette of the artist, Sir Cedric Morris who bred the Benton series, hold a fragrant promise, and while they may occasionally grace you with an autumn encore, their summer spectacle alone is enough to captivate the senses. Grows 90cm.

Planting tips:

Prepare the bed well by digging in lots of composted organic matter before you plant. Where possible, plant in odd numbers, and cluster them together to give impact. Multiples of 3 work really well set out in irregular triangles for an organic feel, while larger numbers can be planted in mercurial clusters or drifts. In bigger gardens, try to repeat your clusters through the border to create a sense of rhythm and cohesion. Also, when setting your plants out, check their eventual spread and make sure they’ve enough space to fill out. After planting, keep plants well watered for their first year, particularly during warmer weather, and feed them with a good, general purpose fertiliser through the growing season.
